Fantastic book for children, and a wonderful story!, January 14, 1997

By A Customer

I bought this book on a whim for my daughter, as I am a
great fan of Native American mythology and beliefs. I
got it after a short wait, and looked through it.

The artwork is simply amazing; beatiful, detailed pictures
accompany each portion of the story.. Even the surprised
looks on the faces of people as Raven plays his trickster
games is done magnificently!

The story itself is well written. It's the basic and ancient
legend of how Raven stole the sun, but done very well, in
language that even young kids can understand. It's a fun
story to read, too, since you can make the book come alive
by adding a few of your own choice sound effects, and just
watch the look on your son or daughter's face...

But, best of all, children love it. When I first read it to
my four-year-old, her eyes lit up, she became completely
drawn into the story, and laughed and giggled as Raven did
his thing. She even demanded that I read it over again - a
rarity for my daughter, since she has a huge library of her
own now!

I'll buy anything else I can find from this author. He won
a Caldecott for this book, and small wonder; his work is
absolutely magnificent, and I recommend getting it in
hardcover because you'll wear the covers off a softcover
version! Enjoy it!

Enders World Perspectives Classic ebook

A.C.E.S. - Adult-Child Entitlement Syndrome, by Barbara Jaurequi, informs parents of more than just the steps necessary to facilitate independence of an adult-child residing in their home. A book suitable for reading by older-teens and adults, A.C.E.S. - Adult-Child Entitlement Syndrome, fully describes the problem of A.C.E.S. in families and addresses the issues that commonly lead to its development.
The book provides parents with valuable information about how to avoid and/or remedy many marital and adult-child-related problems. And, as the grabber at the top of the cover indicates, the book includes a step-by-step process that teaches A.C.E.S. parents how to compassionately mobilize their adult-children into the world of personal responsibility. Perhaps even more importantly, the book thoroughly teaches the process by which spouses can repair the damage A.C.E.S. has done to their marriages.
Well-written, concise and easy-to-read, A.C.E.S. - Adult-Child Entitlement Syndrome contains information that every parent and married couple can learn from.

Reflections Dawn Consciousness Bicameral Revisited

Reflections Dawn Consciousness Bicameral Revisited

For three decades I have been enthralled by the ideas put forth in Julian Jaynes's "The Origin of Consciousness In the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" and have been waiting in vain (until now) for a follow-up volume. "Reflections On the Dawn of Consciousness" is a collection of incisive essays by Julian Jaynes himself and by others, commenting on and extending his previously published work.

Even after thirty years I cannot say that I feel that I have fully accepted (or, perhaps, fully understood) all aspects of Jaynes's theories about the eruption of consciousness just a few millennia ago, but I do believe he provided a very strong case for the reality of the bicameral mind and its role in providing the auditory hallucinations which were interpreted as the voices of gods in ancient times. Kuijsten's book reinforces these points. Although "Reflections On the Dawn of Consciousness" could be read independently (and as an introduction to Jaynes's work), it will probably be most appreciated by those familiar with Jaynes's book. Neither volume provides what might be called "light reading," but both are intensely thought-provoking.

Thank You Puppies Thomas Nelson

Thank You Puppies Thomas Nelson

I love that this book includes specifics on insulating old trailers and making them more energy-efficient. There are also some excellent examples of retrofitted trailers that don't even look like trailers anymore, and have given their residents decades of low-cost shelter while undergoing improvements. My husband and I live in a trailer on our own land and I've always been curious about the steps involved in making a trailer more permanent. I see people adding roofs and ports over their trailers, or putting on new walls, but I've never gotten an inside look at the process. If you're like me and you're wondering how to live better-- cheaply and comfortably-- on your own land, then this book offers detailed examples of people who are already doing it.I should mention that we were one of the families interviewed for the book. We're just starting out and constantly trying to decide whether we want to keep investing in the trailer or save for a new home construction. In the meantime, we're happy to have a great, cheap place to stay until we make that decision.

The book covers a pretty broad range of topics, but the inclusion of interviews gives some detail on local differences in laws and perceptions regarding trailers. The author mentions the benefits of stronger wall studs, sturdy flooring, and several insulating options. Understanding some of these basics can be helpful for those beginning their search for a trailer. There is even a short section on finding land. I don't entirely agree with the emphasis on choosing "ugly duckling" land because of lower prices, since title issues and legal access problems can be more costly than the money saved. Even so, she points out that prospective buyers have to know upfront what they are comfortable with and where to draw the line.

Practical advice aside, another thing I like about this book is that it addresses some of the stigmas and myths about trailer living. The social stigmas can be a big deterrent for a lot of people, especially for some who would benefit most from the cheaper, build-as-you-go opportunities a trailer provides. This book can be a great way for folks considering trailer living to share some of the upsides of the lifestyle with family members who are uneasy about your decision.
